Suzuki Seijun and Postwar Japanese Cinema – Review for Alphaville

I recently published a review for Alphaville Journal of Film and Screen Media, an Irish publication connected with University College Cork, looking at a 2022 book on Suzuki Seijun by William Carroll. My article explores the turbulent career of one of Japanese cinema’s notable directors from the postwar era, and Carroll’s critical reappraisal of Suzuki’s work from the perspective of his intersection with the New Left intellectual movement of the time.

William Carroll’s book, which makes for a compelling introduction to the postwar era of Japanese cinema, and an insightful overview of Suzuki’s career from a formal and thematic perspective, is titled Suzuki Seijun and Postwar Japanese Cinema and is published by Columbia University Press (ISBN 978-0-231-20437-8).
